PELTON TURBINES 3
The on-site work required for the installation of a Pelton turbine is minimal. A flat foundation to mount the turbine on, a supply pipe and a tailwater run-off are all that is required to make the unit operational.
Routine inspection of the water passages can be effected using inspection hatches in the casing.
The items most subject to wear i.e. the nozzles and spear tips, can thus be readily changed during a short shut-down period.
For larger outputs, we would recommend a specially designed installation. This
would be built around one of our standard runners and would still retain many
of the advantages of
standardisation.
The efficiency of the
Pelton hydroelecticity turbine is excellent, and can nominally be over 90% for
larger machines, remaining high down to 20% of the maximum flow.
For 1 and 2 jet configurations, the turbines are usually built with a horizontal shaft. For more than 2 jets, it is necessary to mount the turbine shaft vertically.
a range
of Pelton turbines with vertically orientated shafts for single and multi-jet
configurations.
With the high rotational speeds of these turbines it is usually possible to directly couple the turbine runner to the generator shaft at a wide range of synchronous speeds for 5OHz or 60Hz at various voltages.
The main advantages in using a Pelton turbine for a high head site is its good
efficiency curve. Problems associated with water hammer in the event of emergency
shut-down are resolved by the use of jet deflectors and these can be provided
on all
Pelton turbine designs.
Another advantage of the design is that the civil work is reduced to a minimum, and erection on site is greatly simplified.
