AXIAL FLOW TURBINES 2
The main difference between the Axial Flow turbine and the Kaplan turbine is that in the Axial Flow turbine, the water is directed axially (i.e. parallel to the orientation of the turbine shaft, rather than radially) onto the runner blades by the guide vanes.
In addition, the runner blades and guide vanes in an Axial Flow turbine can either be adjustable, or fixed to a specific angle.
An Axial Flow turbine with adjustable runner blades and guide vanes is classified as being double-regulated.
An Axial Flow turbine with adjustable runner blades and fixed guide vanes is classified as a runner regulated turbine.
A fixed runner blade, adjustable guide vane machine, is classed as a guide-vane regulated turbine.
