Axial flow turbines are very similar to Kaplans except that any guide vanes (fixed) or wicket gates (adjustable) are placed above the runner rather than radially around it. The runner can also either be fixed propeller or a Kaplan like adjustable. This gives the main subtypes of this reaction turbine:
- Fixed Propeller & Fixed Guide Vane Machines
- Fixed Propeller & Adjustable Wicket Gates
- Kaplan Runner & Adjustable Wicket Gates
